Idle Essence is a humorous collection of short stories and novellas by Lee Mueller. While known primarily for his award-winning comedy murder mystery plays: Murder Me Always, and Death Of A Doornail, in his first novel, he examines a child growing up in the Midwest during the late 1960s - early 1970s with the character of Marvin Milstead.

Each story explores a different season; from the first day of kindergarten with Kitties In The Garden through the divorce of his parents and adapting those changes in the story For A Change. Breezeway Bruises and What's In There? explore with a rich sense of humor the lengths a kid can go to prevent boredom. The late 60s and early 70s may have been a turbulent time for the world, but for young kids growing up in the suburbs, sometimes the biggest worry was how to spend a Saturday afternoon.
